About Our Programme

The Graduate Development Programme has two paths: Operations or Engineering. In this structured, rotational development programme, you will be exposed to all aspects of the metals recycling industry that relate to the path you choose.

SMM UK graduate program

Across both paths you will have the opportunity to contribute your ideas and be empowered to make value-based decision as you immerse yourself in a variety of capital projects, new equipment installation/commissioning and continuous/process improvement initiatives across our UK operations.

Through these projects/rotations, you will gain exposure to, and knowledge about, the various functional departments within Sims Metal, such as engineering, production, logistics, safety and finance. This integrated approach will provide diverse experiences across the work environments at Sims Metal, including significant time working outside with the operational teams and developing experience through proximity to our complex processing equipment.

Have You Got What it Takes

To be successful in this challenging position you will:

  • Have or be on course to achieve a 2:1 or above in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical), Economics, Manufacturing, Logistics or Operations management.
  • Be able to effectively communicate in English
  • Be a self-starter; able to work independently, accept and expect accountability; open to learning and highly motivated.
  • Know how to earn trust, inspire respect and communicate.
  • Have an inquiring mind; resourceful approach and contribute new ideas.
  • Leverage the strength of a team whilst embracing different perspectives.
  • Have excellent customer service skills complimented by your keen eye for detail and a never-ending commitment to delivering results.

You will be assigned to a primary location but; flexibility is important, as you’ll be expected to be geographically mobile as you could be assigned to different locations globally for special projects.

Whilst participating in the Graduate Development programme, you will be paired with a mentor who will provide you with insight, knowledge, support and guidance. You will also receive interactive, hands-on training, as well as a series of blended learning modules that will help develop and strengthen your professional knowledge and skills.

Your hard work and contribution will be recognised with a competitive salary of around £28,500pa, plus a joining bonus of £2,000 on successful completion of probationary period.

POST GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Towards the end of your programme you will be supported in your first leadership role, where you will build on what you’ve learnt and discover how to lead a team.  After completing the programme, you will commence a challenging yet rewarding role, where you will continue to be prepared for future leadership roles within the business; that allow you to contribute to Sims success while continuing to grow professionally.
