Company history for Sims Metal Management

Sims Metal Management is the world’s leading metal recycling company. A public limited company, listed on the New York and Australian stock exchanges, the group achieved a turnover of over £5.8 billion in the financial year ending 2011.

Operating in over 250 locations on five continents, Sims Metal Management employs over 6,000 people. Over 14.3 million tonnes of metal was recycled by the company worldwide during fiscal year 2011. Energy saved from re-use of this recycled metal is enough to off-set carbon emissions of almost 3.3 million people (based on the average global emissions of carbon per person being almost 4.5 tonnes).

Global recycling operations

Sims Metal Management Limited has two divisions. Sims Metal Management focuses on non-hazardous scrap metal recycling such as end of life cars and metal waste from manufacturing processes, whilst Sims Recycling Solutions focuses on the recovery and recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) containing hazardous substances such as fridges, IT and telecommunications equipment.

In the UK, Sims Metal Management operates from 42 local scrap metal yards and regional world class hubs with specialist facilities. Including operations from Sims Recycling Solutions, this rises to over 40 UK sites.
